Manchester United have confirmed today that they have signed goalkeeper Janina Leitzig. She has joined the club on a three-year contract.
The club have triggered her release from Leicester City following their relegation from the Women’s Super League, after her contract was renewed only last year. She is said to have been given the number 25 shirt.
Her Time With Leicester
The German joined Leicester in January 2023 on a transfer from FC Bayern Munich. The contract became a permanent one in the following season, making her a frequent player in their starting eleven.
Her contract was renewed most recently in 2025, marking a three-season stint at the King Power Stadium. She will now leave the club for Manchester United for an undisclosed fee.
During her time with Leicester City, the goalkeeper made 69 appearances across three years. She was also named Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year in 2023.
Now that her transfer is complete, City have expressed their thanks for her dedication and hard work at the club.
Other Achievements
The experienced player began her youth career with TuS Mingolsheim, before joining TSG 1899 Hoffenheim Youth in 2013, where she later made her senior debut.
She made the move to FC Bayern Munich in 2021, spending two seasons with the club. She had the opportunity to represent the club in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Across her career, the 27-year-old has made over 100 senior appearances across her career, including a wealth of experience in the WSL.
Moving to Manchester United
Now that she has been released from Leicester City, the keeper will join the Reds on a three-year contract. She spoke of her excitement to play with the team:
“It is a real honour to be a Manchester United player. I’m ready to bring all of my experience of competing at the highest level to help the team to have a successful season.
“I am joining a really excellent group of goalkeepers; everyone has told me about the great environment that they have created. I cannot wait to push all together to maintain the high performance standards that this club deserves.”
Director of women’s football Matt Johnson also spoke highly of the German player:
“Janina has proven her ability to compete at the highest level. Her experience and quality make her an excellent addition to our goalkeeping group.
“She has performed in elite sporting environments throughout her career and has the personality and determination to succeed at Manchester United.”
The Best Choice for United?
There is no doubt that Leitzig has significant experience with top-flight teams. Her ability to play in high-stakes games will support her in joining the Reds.
However, it is worth noting that she has joined from Leicester, who were relegated to WSL2 after last season. This is a big change for the goalkeeper as she joins a team who finished in the top four last season.
The news comes after the arrival of Andrea Medina earlier in the summer. These two signings are a good start for Manchester United, however they will need to make more if they are to battle for top spot next season.
