Nahki Wells could face a race against time to be ruled fit to play in the EFL Trophy Final after the Luton Town forward was forced off the field against AFC Wimbledon.

The former Huddersfield Town man lasted just 17 minutes in South West London on Easter Monday, with the Bermudian replaced by Ali Al-Hamadi, who scored the second in the Hatters’ 3-0 triumph.

Wells To Undergo Scan

Jack Wilshere’s side have struggled to find a regular starting striker throughout the campaign, and now look set to head to Wembley with just two fit options in Al-Hamadi and January signing Devante Cole.

Last week saw Elijah Adebayo ruled out for the remainder of the season after he underwent surgery on his hip less just a handful of days after making his long-awaited return from an ACL injury.

Now, speaking to the Royal Gazette about why he was substituted in the first half, Wells said:

“I felt my groin so I couldn’t continue. I don’t think it’s bad, but I won’t know the severity until I’ve scanned it.”

Late Season Flourish Continues

As much as Nahki Wells’ setback will put a slight dampener on the mood in the Luton Town camp, they are hitting their stride at the perfect moment to try and reverse the slide the club has seen over the past two years.

While the 35-year-old is now a doubt to face Stockport County at Wembley, that loss has come at a time when Ali Al-Hamadi has finally found some momentum, having taken Iraq to the World Cup over the international break and now has scored his first goal for the club at his old stomping ground of Plough Lane.

It now puts them short of attacking options with just the former Stoke City man and Devante Cole as their senior striking options, but based on the comments of Wells, it will not be long before the veteran rejoins them.

Town will head down the M1 full of confidence ahead of the EFL Trophy Final, with their form over the last five matches being the joint-best of any League One club alongside runaway leaders Lincoln City.

A triumph over Stockport will not only bring some silverware back to Kenilworth Road, but also prove that they can tackle and beat a fellow play-off challenging side, something which could prove pivotal if they are to overturn the deficit to sixth-place Stevenage, who have a game in hand on Wilshere’s men.
