Lincoln City defender Lewis Montsma could be set to leave the club this week, with a reunion with a former manager on the cards.

The Dutchman joined the club from FC Dordrecht in 2020 and made an immediate impact, scoring nine goals as Michael Appleton’s men narrowly missed out on promotion at Wembley.

A once highly regarded defender at the League One level, the 2021-22 season saw the central defender sustain two ACL injuries in a short period, which has kept him on the fringes of the first team since.

Lincoln City’s Lewis Montsma Set for Reunion

The 27-year-old’s time in Lincolnshire could be coming to a close in the final week of the winter window, with former-Imps manager Michael Appleton interested in working with the defender again.

According to reports from BBC Sport Shropshire, League Two strugglers Shrewsbury Town are interested in a move for Montsma, with the defender currently struggling for gametime at Sincil Bank.

Limited to only four appearances this season, he is yet to feature in the club’s League One campaign and has been limited to cup fixtures, despite a strong performance against Chelsea in September.

It comes as little surprise to see Appleton amongst those interested in the defender. The Dutchman has performed excellently under the coach in the past, and his Shrewsbury squad are in dire need of defensive reinforcements.

Conceding five goals against MK Dons last weekend, the Shropshire club’s defensive record is amongst the worst in the division, with a second consecutive relegation emerging as a real possibility.

Could A Move Happen?

Given that Lincoln City has recently secured the signature of Bromley’s Deji Elerewe, an exit for Montsma appears an even more likely possibility.

He has proven himself under Appleton and has shown to be capable in the division above; however, injuries and inconsistent gametime over the years could emerge as a red flag for the defender.

Despite this, he is still at an age where he has much to offer, and regular football should be his priority, despite Salop’s lowly League Two position.

As previously mentioned, he has played his best football under the Shrews boss, so a move to Croud Meadow for regular minutes could be perfect for getting his career back on track.
