This summer is crucial for Leicester City. Fallen giants following their dramatic double relegation into League One, huge question marks loom around several players in their squad, while Russel Martin has been tasked with building a team ready to bounce straight back into the Championship.
Now, they have identified Crystal Palace’s Justin Devenny as a suitable transfer target for their rebuild. The 22-year-old has made a respectable number of appearances in the Palace squad since joining the club in 2024, but the right offer would see the Eagles part ways with the player.
This was reported by Alan Nixon via Patreon, who also states that there is Championship interest in the midfielder.
Leicester City Target Crystal Palace Man
Devenny is a well-accomplished footballer at his age. Versatile, he is capable of operating out wide and through the middle and brings an excellent work rate. Additionally, he is capable of contributing the occasional goal, returning 4 goals in 60 appearances for the South London club.
Although, his role is very much rotational for Palace. Mainly featuring across the early stages of the Eagles’ European Conference League campaign, he was very much limited to the bench for the best part of their league campaign.
And despite Leicester City’s financial woes of late, their budget should still largely exceed that of their divisional rivals next season, and likely several Championship sides. If players of Devenny’s calibre are the benchmark, then the Foxes could certainly assemble a formidable team for the level.
He has also featured for his country, first being called up for Northern Ireland in October 2023 and becoming a regular feature in the starting XI since.
Leicester City’s Current Situation
Last season came as a shock to many. The East Midlands side underperformed heavily, received a points deduction, and eventually succumbed to successive relegations, just ten years after miraculously lifting the Premier League title.
And while they are certainly considered giants at the level, there are so many decisions the Foxes have to get right this summer. The positions of certain players in the squad will need to be confirmed, given their dramatic fall from the top flight, while there should be a focus on reducing their wage bill.
Meanwhile, Leicester City simply cannot afford a potential second season in League One, so promotion is non-negotiable for Russel Martin’s men.
Although if players such as Devenny are the standard being targeted, then they are more than capable of building a fantastic squad for League One level.
