Championship side Leicester City have identified a potential replacement for their soon-to-be outgoing boss Gary Rowett following their relegation to League One. A decade on from their memorable Premier League title win.

The Foxes‘ season went from bad to worse, with a points deduction followed by a campaign that failed to get started. The club last tasted victory on the 10th of March 2026, a 2-0 win over Bristol City which allowed them to briefly move out of the relegation spots. However, a run of three defeats and four draws saw them enter the bottom three once again with the drop confirmed with the season not yet over.

Gary Rowett – A Case of If Not When?

Gary Rowett is fully expected to be sacked at the end of the season as he failed to save the club from the drop.

He admitted to the BBC that he would be happy to stay at the club, but that they may look to go in a different direction.

“But I’m not going to sit here and try to put pressure on anyone. I’ve managed more than 600 games. If the club decide they want that type of manager moving forward, that’s up to them.

“I’d also understand if they see it as a fresh start and a fresh opportunity to go in a different direction.”

However, it must be noted that the former Birmingham City boss only had 14 games to save the season. But even he will likely admit that a return of just one win is far from making his case to keep the job next season as they tackle the third tier’s challenges.

Leicester City Identify Dick Schreuder As New Boss

The club’s board are reportedly not waiting until Rowett departs to start the search for a new manager. According to Alan Nixon (paywall), they have identified former Barnet man Dick Schreuder as a potential candidate.

The 54-year-old Dutch coach has had a successful season managing in the Eredivisie, with his side sitting in an impressive third place behind PSV and Feyenoord but ahead of Ajax. Despite their relegation, the former Premier League Champions feel that they could tempt Schreuder to make the move to the EFL.

Is This The Right Move for the Foxes?

There is no denying that Dick Schreuder has an impressive CV in European football. But playing in the topflight of Dutch Football and in the depths of the EFL are very different prospects. The lure of English football can have a huge pull for coaches from the continent, and the size of the club could tempt him.

But would he consider switching playing against Ajax and the prospect of UEFA competitions in the future for a Tuesday night against Bromley? Would he know how to navigate the different style of football? That remains to be seen.

The Foxes need to get this move right, or they could very quickly find themselves planning for a season in League Two in a year’s time. A prospect that seemed foreign when they were listening to the Champions League anthem playing just a short time ago.
