Fleetwood Town are lining up a free transfer move for former Wrexham midfielder Andy Cannon as Matt Lawlor continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new League Two season.
The Cod Army have identified the 30-year-old as a midfield target following his release by Wrexham, according to Pete O’Rourke.
Cannon spent the second half of last season on loan at Burton Albion, making 16 League One appearances after recovering from a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury. He did not score or provide an assist during that spell, but the move allowed him to return to regular football after a lengthy period on the sidelines.
Wrexham confirmed in May that Cannon would leave the club at the end of his contract, making him available without a transfer fee.
Fleetwood are seeking to strengthen their midfield after Matty Virtue joined Swindon Town earlier in the summer. Cannon’s experience, versatility and technical qualities could make him a useful replacement, with the midfielder capable of playing in a more advanced position or operating deeper.

He began his career with Rochdale, progressing through their academy before making his senior debut in September 2014. Cannon went on to play 127 times in all competitions for the club, scoring six goals, before Portsmouth signed him for an undisclosed fee in January 2019.
The midfielder made 79 appearances during his time at Fratton Park and later joined Hull City, scoring on his debut in a 4-1 Championship victory over Preston North End.
A loan spell at Stockport County followed during the 2021/22 campaign, with Cannon helping the Hatters win the National League title and secure their return to the EFL.
He joined Wrexham permanently in December 2022 and played an important role during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. Cannon helped Phil Parkinson’s side win promotion from the National League before making 35 League Two appearances the following season as Wrexham secured a second successive promotion.
He remained involved as the Welsh club finished as League One runners-up in 2024/25, taking their remarkable rise into the Championship to three consecutive promotions. Cannon made 88 appearances in all competitions during his time at the Racecourse Ground, scoring ten goals.
Fleetwood have already added Danny Andrew, Josh Thomas and Kane Thompson-Sommers to their squad this summer. Cannon would become their fourth signing and provide further competition alongside Elliot Bonds, Mark Helm, Harrison Neal and Thompson-Sommers.
Lawlor is preparing for his first full season in charge after replacing Pete Wild, with Fleetwood hoping to improve on last season’s performance and challenge towards the upper end of League Two.
Cannon’s track record at Wrexham and Stockport means he already has considerable experience of successful promotion campaigns. Having returned to fitness with Burton, a move to Fleetwood could now offer him the opportunity to rebuild his momentum and establish himself as a regular starter once again.
