Leicester City manager Russell Martin has admitted he understands calls for him to be sacked but has warned that a change in the dugout won’t fix the issues that have plagued their poor start to the season.
The Foxes began the campaign as one of the favourites to secure promotion from League One following their shock relegation from the Championship last season. However, things have gone from bad to worse on the pitch, with yesterday’s 3-1 home defeat against Peterborough United putting them just one point above the bottom four.
It was former player Robbie Savage who delivered the latest hammer blow to the 2016 Premier League champions. Having made over 200 appearances for the club between 1997 and 2002, the 51-year-old took over at Posh last week before yesterday’s excellent victory at the King Power Stadium.
Leicester In Disarray
Martin hit the news last week when he was confronted by a fan following a 2-1 defeat against Stevenage in the EFL Trophy. Following the game, a supporter waited for the manager in a viral video in which he questioned the playing style of the team.
The former Swansea City boss defended his players, stating that the 135 shots they had in the previous five outings outperformed his predecessors. In truth, he came across well in the clip and was widely praised for his handling of the situation. However, the talking has failed to translate to the pitch.
Yesterday’s showing, particularly in the first half, was a combination of shambolic defending and poor finishing. As a result, they found themselves 3-0 down at the break. An improved showing in the second half was a mere consolation, but the damage had already been done.

Martin Understands Frustration But Calls For Patience
It was the Peterborough fans who started the usual ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ chants which usually accompany results such as these. What was unusual was the Leicester fans joining in with the away support.
Following the game, Martin was asked whether he could understand the growing frustration. Via Leicestershire Live, the 40-year-old said:
“I can’t criticise them because they’ve seen another defeat and the goals we concede.”
Continuing, the manager called for patience, stating that a change in the dugout is unlikely to fix the situation:
“I’m as frustrated as any of them, but if you think changing a manager is a quick fix, then I’m not sure that’s ever the way. But we have to keep working, it’s as simple as that.
“It’s our job to turn the fans’ energy ultimately, like I said, they were great when it went 3-1 today. A lot of people left because they’re feeling hurt by the first half, and so was I, but they were brilliant after that.
“So the chants are what they are, it is what it is. We have to keep our heads down, work really hard and I have to accept that, the personal stuff, because I’m in charge of the team. It’s my responsibility.”
Leicester are next in action on Saturday when they entertain Doncaster Rovers. Whether Martin is still in charge remains to be seen.
