Hartlepool United are set to confirm their first signing of the summer, as manager Lee Clark begins his preparations for the 2026/27 National League campaign.

The Pools fell short of securing a place in the play-off places last season, meaning they’ve now failed to make it three campaigns running – as their quest to return to the EFL continues.

Once again, Hartlepool underwent another managerial change this summer, with Clark replacing the outgoing interim manager Nicky Featherstone – as the new era of the football club continues to get into shape, following their takeover in January.

Their retained list has already been confirmed, but now it appears as though supporters won’t have long to wait to see their first summer acquisition.

Hartlepool set to land EFL talisman

Following the conclusion of the campaign, Hartlepool confirmed several departures including National League goal-scorer Alex Reid after his deal came to an end, with Reid already moving on to Barrow.

However, this departure (amongst others) has left the Pools in need of attacking options for next season and one name has been identified.

As reported by journalist Pete O’Rourke, Hartlepool are set to complete the signing of EFL talisman Jordan Hugill on a free transfer.

The 34-year-old was released by Rotherham United last month and is set to follow Clark to the National League side.

Hugill made 34 appearances across all competitions for the Millers last season, scoring twice and providing two additional assists as they were relegated down to League Two.

Is this a coup for Hartlepool?

Clark’s side are set to begin their fourth consecutive season in the National League and with the likes of York City & Rochdale no longer in the league, one could argue there is a gap for a side to try and put their stamp on it this season.

The addition of Jordan Hugill will add a plethora of experience to the side – with him having played at every level and scored in all tiers except the Premier League.

However, Hartlepool have made a similar signing in the past when they signed Gary Madine back in the summer of 2024 – but even he wasn’t able to help get the club over the line.

Madine and Hugill have similar appearance and goal records, though this time the latter has recent experience playing for their new manager.

Whilst Hugill’s pedigree can certainly be considered a coup for Hartlepool, they’ll still need further additions around the 34-year-old, to ensure they get the best out of him.
