It has already been a busy summer for FC Halifax Town since the 2025/26 campaign came to an end, but it now appears as though a new issue has arose for the National League side.

Manager Adam Lakeland has already left the football club, in favour of a switch to National League North side Morecambe and has since been replaced by Buxton boss John McGrath.

Similarly, several players including some of their more experienced/longest-serving players have also bid farewell to the football club – but now a recent report appears to suggest that more issues are arising for the Shaymen.

Halifax duo face uncertain futures

In the National League, it rarely comes as a surprise that players with standout seasons in the fifth tier will often be snapped up by teams in the EFL – but that often comes with a transfer/compensation fee.

However, a recent report appears to suggest that Halifax Town could be set to lose two of their standout players in the coming weeks.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, FC Halifax Town midfielder Jay Turner-Cooke is facing an uncertain future with his contract at the side coming to an end, but there is a suggestion that his one-year option was unlawfully exercised.

Fellow journalist Rob Law has also reported that this exact scenario may also taking place with forward Will Harris, who is the subject of interest from fellow National League side Hartlepool United.

In the words of O’Rourke, the suggestion is that Halifax’s player contracts ended on May 5th, but their one-year options were triggered 25 days later, which under standard contracts means that every clause ceased to exist after the 5th – thus making Turner-Cooke & Harris’ options invalid and therefore being free agents.

However, the FA have appeared to have accepted the options being triggered, despite them being done after their respective contracts had expired. O’Rourke also reports that Turner-Cooke in particular is puzzled that the club have exercised an option that technically no longer existed, thus trapping him from leaving this summer.

This incident isn’t the first time a contract option has cause confusion for Halifax this summer. Weeks prior, then manager Lakeland confirmed that defender Adam Adetoro had his one-year option triggered but within weeks, he was confirmed as being released by the football club.

Halifax Town themselves are yet to comment on the ongoing speculation.

How big of a blow would this be for Halifax?

Will Harris contributed to 26 goals across all competitions for the Shaymen last season, in a stunning debut campaign after arriving from Spennymoor Town.

Meanwhile, Turner-Cooke arrived on a free transfer from Newcastle United and quickly took his place at the epicentre of the Halifax midfield, maintaining a consistent threat and maintaining defensive discipline as they narrowly missed out on the play-off places.

Both players have done enough to justify moves away from the club, which in-turn would have brought in transfer fees that would have benefited the club this summer. However, if the reports are true and the traditional laws are applied, Halifax would lose their two biggest assets for nothing.

Admittedly, there is also a big risk of unease surrounding these reports and the potential knock-on affect they could have. If the options are valid and applied, there is a likelihood that both players become unhappy at staying with the side and may try to force a move away from the Shaymen this summer.

Similarly, manager John McGrath is another individual who’s stuck in the middle, with McGrath not knowing who is staying and who is going, meaning he may have been initially misled by the club.

Either way, Halifax have a busy few weeks on the hands, with transfer plans needing to be pressed on with given the new season isn’t too far away.
