Accrington Stanley have signed former Bolton Wanderers defender Oliver Smith on a short-term contract.
The young defender had been training with Stanley for several weeks before completing his move to the League Two club.
Smith was offered fresh terms by Bolton following the conclusion of last season, but elected to leave the Championship side in search of regular senior football.
Smith Seals Accrington Move
After completing the move, Smith explained that the opportunity to work in a first-team environment had influenced his decision.
“It’s good to get it over the line. It’s been in the making for a while, so it’s good we have finally got it sorted.
“I got a scholarship and pro at Bolton and played for the first team a couple of times, but this season, if I want to make it in football, I have to play men’s football, and this was perfect for me.
“I love the manager here, John Doolan. He has been brilliant with me. I like the club, the lads are quality, it’s everything about it.”
The short-term nature of the agreement gives Smith an opportunity to earn an extended stay at the Wham Stadium while providing Stanley with additional defensive cover.
Bolton Wanderers Pathway
Smith progressed through the academy at Bolton before signing his first professional contract during the summer of 2025.
He made his senior debut against Rotherham United in the Vertu Trophy and subsequently featured against Manchester City Under-21s in the same competition.
The defender was later loaned to FC Halifax Town, giving him experience of senior football in the National League. Bolton offered Smith a new contract at the end of last season, but an agreement was not reached.
His departure brought an end to his time with Wanderers and allowed Accrington to bring him into their squad without paying a transfer fee.
Doolan Backs New Signing
Accrington manager John Doolan believes Smith’s versatility and desire to play senior football make him a good fit for the club.
“Ollie has been in the building for quite some time. He is a very good player and fits everything we are looking for in a player.
“He has good qualities and he can play a number of positions, which is good for us.
“He doesn’t want to play Under-21s football. He wants to be around a first-team environment, and we can give him that opportunity. It’s then over to him. When he gets the opportunity, he has to take it.”
Smith joins an Accrington side that recorded its first league victory of the season with a 3-2 win against Crawley Town last weekend.
The Reds have collected five points from their opening five games and travel to Barnet next. Smith will now hope to force his way into Doolan’s plans and establish himself in the EFL.
