Cardiff City have set their sights on Sheffield Wednesday‘s Pierce Charles as the Bluebirds look to replace Nathan Trott.

Brian Barry-Murphy’s side are currently set to lose their loanee goalkeeper at the end of the season despite submitting an offer to make his spell in South Wales permanent.

Reports from Denmark have suggested that the Bermudian international has rejected an offer from Cardiff in order to try and secure a move elsewhere, with other Championship clubs eyeing a move on top of a chance to reclaim his first-choice spot with parent club FC Copenhagen.

City Rivalled For Charles Move

With Cardiff on the back foot when it comes to securing their current goalkeeper upon their ascent back into the Championship, the club are now identifying new options to play between the sticks next season.

According to Football League World, the Bluebirds have now honed in on Sheffield Wednesday’s Pierce Charles, who is one of many tipped with a move away from Hillsborough amid their financial struggles.

The 20-year-old has been one of the few remaining stars for the Owls this season after the club was asset stripped for many of their best talents, but injury issues has limited him to just 18 Championship appearances.

However, Cardiff are not alone in pursuing the Northern Ireland international in the summer, with FLW also reporting that Queens Park Rangers are interested in Charles to become their new first choice option.

The Loftus Road outfit are in a similar situation when it comes to their options going into the summer, with both Ben Hamer and Paul Nardi both set for free exits at the end of June with their contracts expiring.

Reports from TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook earlier this month has also stated that Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers are both also monitoring Wednesday’s goalkeeper, which could line up a reunification with former Owls manager Danny Rohl at Ibrox.

Cardiff Up Against It

News of Cardiff City hunting new goalkeeper options may come as a massive blow in terms of their fortunes in securing Nathan Trott on a permanent basis and hints that he will not reconsider the offer tabled by the Bluebirds.

Brian Barry-Murphy has now moved on to looking for new options, and sticking with his ability to develop young talents into stars as he has done with players like Dylan Lawlor and Ronan Kpakio this season, he has landed on Pierce Charles.

Being up against it with a Sheffield Wednesday side on his knees, Charles has done admirably with his efforts, rightly earning him suitors from across England, Wales and Scotland.

However, Cardiff may struggle to tempt the 20-year-old to join their project, with both Celtic and Rangers best placed to seal a deal for Charles.

The Hoops are in need of a new first-choice option with Kasper Schmeichel set to depart and perhaps retire at the end of this season, while a move to Ibrox will see him rejoin Danny Rohl after his exit from Wednesday at the start of the season.

Rangers may prove to be a no-brainer option, but could be the toughest path to regular game time as it would line up a direct showdown with Jack Butland, who has been an outstanding player in Glasgow since his arrival in 2023.
