Blackburn Rovers have been linked with Cambridge United head coach Neil Harris as the search for Valerien Ismael’s replacement continues, with the League Two boss said to have support inside Ewood Park.

With Gary Rowett still viewed as the leading target, Harris is being talked about as a fallback option if Rovers cannot get a deal over the line.

The latest name to surface is Harris, currently in charge at Cambridge United, and reportedly on a “standby list” should Blackburn’s pursuit of Rowett stall. The claim is that Harris has backing within the club and could be approached if progress is not made, as Rovers continue to weigh up options while trying to steer clear of the Championship drop.

Blackburn have been operating with Damien Johnson in interim charge since Ismael’s departure, and the results have been mixed, a win over Sheffield Wednesday followed by defeat to Norwich City. With the table tight at the bottom, and Rovers sitting 22nd on goal difference, the pressure to land the right appointment is growing, even if the club are taking a patient approach rather than rushing into a decision.

Other names have been in the frame

Harris is not the first option to be linked since the vacancy opened up. Leam Richardson has been mentioned in the picture as a possible contender, with reports suggesting Blackburn have looked at the Reading boss as they cast the net wider than Rowett. Richardson’s name has been part of the wider noise around the job in recent days as Rovers consider different profiles, from proven Championship operators to managers currently building projects elsewhere.

Robbie Savage has also been tied to the job in some quarters, a link that plays on his association with Blackburn as a former player, and the idea of a more left-field appointment. That speculation has ebbed and flowed, but it has been notable enough to sit alongside other reported candidates as the search has rolled on.

Mark Hughes is another name that has been floated, with the suggestion of a return to Ewood Park forming part of the broader discussion around the vacancy. As with several of the names mentioned during any managerial hunt, the situation has been one of rumour, reporting and counter-reporting, but Hughes has still been referenced as a possible option as Blackburn attempt to find stability in a difficult season.

Why Harris is being discussed

After those links, attention has returned to Harris because he fits a familiar pattern for clubs fighting at the wrong end of the table. He is an experienced EFL head coach, he has previously operated in the Championship, and he has a reputation for organising sides quickly, the kind of attribute relegation-threatened clubs tend to prioritise when the margin for error shrinks.

Harris is also currently doing credible work at Cambridge. His side sit 5th in League Two, and the underlying numbers being cited with the link point to a team built on structure, with Cambridge conceding 24 goals in 29 league games. A 12-game unbeaten run was ended on Saturday, but their position in the promotion places is still being used as evidence that he has got them moving in the right direction.

There is, however, a clear obstacle if Blackburn decide to turn interest into action. Harris is under contract at Cambridge until the summer of 2027, and with the U’s chasing promotion, losing their head coach at this stage of the campaign would be a significant disruption. For Blackburn, that would mean a negotiation, and likely compensation, at a time when they are also balancing the urgency of their league position with the desire to make the right long-term call.

For now, Rowett remains the headline target, and the sense is that Blackburn are prepared to wait for their preferred choice. But by lining up alternatives, and with Harris now being spoken about as one of them, the manager hunt looks set to rumble on, at least until Rovers decide whether patience is still the best option with a trip to QPR and a Lancashire derby against Preston looming large in the fixture list.
