York City defender Malachi Fagan-Walcott is set to be the subject of a ‘significant six-figure’ bid from Scottish Premiership runners-up Hearts this summer, according to The Daily Record.
The 24-year-old enjoyed a superb campaign at the heart of York’s defence and played a key role in the club’s National League title-winning season as the Minstermen secured a long-awaited return to the Football League. Perhaps his biggest contribution came against Altrincham last month when the former England youth international bagged a 96th minute winner to secure a 2-1 victory.
With eight goals throughout the season, Fagan-Walcott was a part of the starting lineup in the dramatic final day shoot-out against Rochdale which saw York score a dramatic 113th minute equaliser to seal promotion to League Two.
Hearts Looking To Make Early Additions
Whilst York were celebrating their own success, Hearts suffered heartbreak on the final day of the Scottish campaign. Having led the Premiership for the majority of the season, they travelled to Celtic knowing a draw would be enough to end the 41-year Old Firm dominance. It wasn’t to be, as the Bhoys picked up a 3-1 victory to snatch the title.
As a result, manager Derek McInnes has already started planning for next season. Lincoln City youngster MJ Kamara a target. It now appears as if Fagan-Walcott is another on their radar, with reports claiming the Jam Tarts are keen on striking a six-figure deal.
It is stated that his performances in Yorkshire have caught the eye, whilst loan spells at Dundee and Dunfermline Athletic indicate he is a player who can cut it north of the border.
What Has Fagan-Walcott Said About His Future?
The former Cardiff City defender has already hinted that he is aware of interest from elsewhere. Speaking after clinching the National League title a month ago, he said:
“I don’t actually know who has come in. I’ve spoken to my agent but we’re all just on cloud nine at the minute, so I don’t know what is happening.
“I’ve spoken to Matt (Uggla). All I want to do is keep going up the pyramid, keep getting better and that’s the plan.
“I don’t actually know what is there for the future but York have a special place in my heart. Hopefully, with York, we can go as high as possible.”
The centre-back is under contract at the LNER Community Stadium until 2029, having made his loan spell from Cardiff permanent in 2024. However, the chance of European football with Hearts is likely to be an attractive proposition.
