Wycombe Wanderers are set to sign winger Silko Thomas following his exit from League One newcomers Leicester City.
The 22-year-old opted to walk away from the Foxes over the summer despite having a new offer on the table as part of their end-of-season retained list announcements.
Wycombe Secure Move
Since his exit from the East Midlands, some sides have emerged as potential destinations, and his future was on the verge of being decided yesterday when Pete O’Rourke revealed that an unnamed League One side had entered advanced talks.
Since then, it has emerged that Wycombe Wanderers were that club, and have now agreed a deal in principle to bring the free agent to Adams Park.
Being largely used as a rotation option behind Stephy Mavididi and Abdul Fatawu last season, Thomas managed just 17 appearances in the Championship, with just one, a New Year’s Day defeat against Sheffield United, being from the start.
The left-sided winger has previous League One experience to his name, with a half-season, 31-appearance loan at Wigan Athletic, which was cut short by a knee injury.
Wycombe head into the new season having been handed a boost after securing a new contract for Fred Onyedinma, who was widely expected to leave the Chairboys, and have offloaded wantaway James Tilley to AFC Wimbledon.
Wrong Step For Thomas?
Silko Thomas had a tough season at Leicester City, as did many, and their relegation could have proved to be a beneficial step in his career.
With Jeremy Monga already out of the door, Abdul Fatawu subject to a transfer war between West Ham United and Besiktas and Stephy Mavididi expected to be sold in order to fund transfer business, Thomas could have played a much more pivotal role with regular action over the course of the season for a side that should challenge for promotion.
Nevertheless, he has opted to walk and that comes to the benefit of Michael Duff and Wycombe Wanderers, who are in need of a left-sided winger to complement Junior Quitirna.
While he will face competition from Andre Vidigal and Alex Lowry for a place in the Chairboys’ starting lineup, Thomas will surely play a larger role than he has seen at Leicester, but whether he can deliver top-notch performances remains to be seen.
