Rotherham United have been relegated to League Two, following their midweek defeat to Wigan Athletic.
Their relegation to League Two comes as a shock to many. They weren’t in the relegation talk for most pundits and fans pre-season, but a horrid time on the field has seen them drop to the fourth tier of English football.
To some Millers’ fans, the relegation isn’t such a shock, given the mismanagement of the club off the field and the poor squad on the field.
Speaking to The Deck, that’s what one Rotherham United fan outlined as issues at the club.
Rotherham United Fan Outlines Three Changes They Need
Ryan, who has been going to Rotherham games for 20 years and has been a season ticket holder since 2012/13, told The Deck the three things his club needs to do to restore faith amongst the fan base and progress the club:
“First, we need long-term plans from the board and a manager. Tony [Stewart] has only made two good appointments: Steve Evans, first time round and Paul Warnock. He got lucky when he appointed Paul Warne.
“Second is addressing the squad. There is a real lack of quality, a lot of old and injury-prone players getting their last paydays. We used to have a core of good players to build around, but now we have none. It’s probably only Sam Nombe that’s worth holding onto, but the rest can go.
“Last of all, we need more engagement from the club. There’s been nothing from Tony all season; he’s not been to a fan forum or anything. The organisation at the club is a joke. We announced there would be an interim manager until the end of the season online, and then half an hour later announced Clark.”
What’s Been the Issue for Rotherham This Season?
The Millers have struggled to both score goals and keep the ball out of their own net.
Rotherham have scored just 36 goals this season, with only Port Vale and Northampton Town scoring fewer.
What is likely more alarming for Rotherham fans is the number of goals they’ve conceded. The side has conceded 65 goals, only Leyton Orient (66) has conceded more.
Their goalkeeping struggles haven’t helped with that. Cameron Dawson was their number for the majority of the season, but the former Sheffield Wednesday man was dropped after a mistake against Doncaster Rovers.
Ted Cann has stepped in since Dawson was dropped, but he hasn’t always looked the most assured. He looked shaky against Peterborough United, receiving a 5.4 Sofascore rating as the side lost 5-0.
Whoever is in charge at the club next season will need to make sure they have a number one they can rely on.
