Sheffield Wednesday Eye Up Potential Championship Midfielder Swoop

Sheffield Wednesday could make a move to sign Wrexham‘s George Dobson as the Red Dragons look to land Ben Whiteman.

Football Lowdown exclusively revealed that a training ground bust-up means that the Preston North End captain was looking to leave and join the Red Dragons having been sent to train with the academy sides.

Dobson Under Owls Consideration

With Whiteman already stating to manager Paul Heckingbottom that he has played his last game at Deepdale, Wrexham are targeting the 30-year-old as a new addition alongside West Bromwich Albion‘s Jayson Molumby.

Now, should those dominoes fall into place, it could lead to an exit at the Racecourse Ground, with a report from Darren Witcoop revealing that George Dobson could be of interest to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls are looking to add more options to their ranks ahead of a first season back in League One, but new owners Arise Capital are bound to an EFL-agreed transfer spending limit, meaning the remainder of the club’s business will have to either be loan deals or free transfers.

Henrik Pedersen has already added to veterans to his side over the summer, with Millwall duo Billy Mitchell and Barry Bannan heading to Hillsborough on free deals, with the latter returning to Yorkshire after six months away.

Under contract for two more years at Wrexham, Dobson played in 40 of the club’s Championship games last season and has been a dependable choice for Phil Parkinson since his free transfer from Charlton Athletic in 2024.

Can Owls Make A Deal Work?

With Wrexham stocked to the brim with talented midfielders and the club looking to potentially add two more in Ben Whiteman and Jayson Molumby, some sacrifices will have to be made in order to accommodate these new additions.

It seems that Sheffield Wednesday have now offered a path for the Championship side to offload George Dobson, who may be a more surprising candidate to be moved on given how favoured he is by Phil Parkinson.

Any deal would also be bound by the restrictions faced by Wednesday, and with two years remaining on his contract on top of his regular game time in the second tier last season, it does not seem like a loan or free transfer deal would work for the selling club.

Having shown what he can do to several clubs over the course of the previous campaign as a more than reliable, defensive-minded midfielder, it would be unfathomable that any interest from Sheffield Wednesday would not be followed up by other offers from Championship sides, who could easily outmuscle the Owls in negotiations.
