Rotherham United manager Matt Hamshaw has picked out the player in his side who has real “character”. He also explained the new role he’s playing for the Millers.
The South Yorkshire side are fighting for its life in League One. With 13 games remaining, they are looking increasingly likely to drop to League Two.
With points needed between now and the end of the season, Rotherham will likely be happy to have a player of Josh Benson’s quality back.
The 26-year-old returned to action against Doncaster Rovers after being out since December. His importance to the side, when fit, is something Hamshaw highlighted in a recent interview.
Hamshaw Explains New Role for Benson
Speaking to the Yorkshire Post ahead of their game against Mansfield Town, Hamshaw discussed the new role Benson is playing:
“I‘ve dropped him a bit deeper to get on the ball a bit more. I felt that we were just missing the midfield out and that isn’t a slant on anybody, but sometimes you just need that character and he’s got that character.
“He’d want the ball in a bad area, he would, but I kind of like that about him as well.”
Hamshaw was also full of praise for Benson’s ability and what he adds to his side:
“I think he’s been an asset when he’s been fully fit wherever he’s been.
“That’s why he went for big money to Barnsley.
“We really liked him when we were here last time, when he was coming through at Burnley. We know he’s got huge potential. We know he can be a very creative player.”
How Has Benson Done This Season?
As Hamshaw alluded to, Benson’s campaign has been hampered by injuries. He’s been limited to just 17 league appearances, which includes only 11 starts.
His performances in the league have received an average Sofascore rating of 6.74, which is the 5th highest in the Millers team.
The 26-year-old has four goal contributions this campaign for Hamshaw’s side. With two assists, he’s the joint second highest creator in the team. While his two goals put him joint third highest in the club.
He has been asked, as Hamshaw said, to get on the ball more than he would have previously. As well as getting two assists, he’s averaging 0.9 key passes per game and has a pass accuracy of 73%.
Benson’s also had to do defensive work for the team. He’s averaging 0.9 tackles per game and recovered 2.6 balls per game.
Hamshaw will likely be keen to make sure the midfielder stays fit to help Rotherham stay in League One.
