Plymouth Argyle are on the brink of striking a deal to sign Mansfield Town striker Will Evans as the Pilgrims search for a replacement for Lorent Tolaj.
Tom Cleverley’s side opted to part with the 24-year-old after accepting a £4 million bid from Bristol City, and with Aribim Pepple poised to stay at Home Park, alternatives to play alongside the Canadian have been considered.
Evans Move In Motion
While some other options have come to the fore in recent weeks, including Michael Mellon and Jaze Kabia, it seems that an advancement has been made for another striker in the form of Will Evans.
According to Dan Marsh of the Daily Mirror, Argyle are now closing in on a deal with Mansfield Town for the 29-year-old for a fee in the region of £400,000, which could rise with further add-ons.
Evans’ place at the Stags was put under threat following the free agent recruitment of David McGoldrick, with Rhys Oates and Michael Smith also vying for game time under Nigel Clough’s plans.
The former Newport County player, who arrived at Field Mill in 2024, was a regular at Town last season, featuring in all but one of their League One matches last season, scoring eight times and providing two assists.
Argyle head into the season with just two senior options in their ranks following Tolaj’s exit, with Pepple supported by Owen Oseni, but signing a new striker has been marked as a clear priority by Tom Cleverley in his pre-season interviews.
Ideal Signing For Argyle?
While perhaps Jaze Kabia is the perfect move for Plymouth Argyle to make this window, the addition of Will Evans could be the more sensible choice for the club to sign.
Of course, the Grimsby Town man would be a statement deal after losing Lorent Tolaj, but a move for a well-proven veteran striker as a third senior option in the squad may be the key.
Will Evans has proven himself to be more than capable at this level, and having a near-spotless injury record in recent years is a perfect remedy to any issues that Owen Oseni or Aribim Pepple may face this season.
The Welsh forward is not the flashiest of deals, but his signature will allow for regular rotation, and that could free up Oseni to have a more regular role in the team, and given his performances in his debut season in Devon, is more than deserving to do so.
More additions should certainly be considered, but Evans’ recruitment should be enough to see Plymouth through the first half of the season, and should any issues arise, then they can invest funds further in January.
