Peterborough United look close to agreeing a permanent deal for talented Sunderland midfielder Abdoullah Ba.
The 23-year-old Frenchman is entering his final season under contract at the Stadium of Light and will be seeking regular game time.
A Career Ready To Ignite
Ba came through the academy at Le Havre and was handed his first professional deal in the summer of 2020, before making his debut the following season in a breakout campaign which saw him complete 18 games in Ligue 2. He then moved to Sunderland in August 2022 on a five-year deal, before scoring his first goal for the Black Cats in a win over Norwich City.
Since then, first-team chances have been limited. He has not featured for Sunderland’s first team since the Carabao Cup tie against Preston North End in August 2024, and has more recently turned out for the club’s U21’s in the National League Cup in two games. In February last year, he returned to France on loan with Dunkerque for the rest of the season before only playing three times for Sunderland’s U21S last season.
Now with a move to Peterborough looking close, as revealed by Sky Sports News, Ba will be looking to rebuild his career at a perfect moment in his career.
Big Season For Posh
It was a below-par season for Peterborough United last campaign, as they finished just four points above the League One relegation zone. Gaffer Luke Williams, who arrived in October, has his work cut out as he faces his first full season in charge in a big campaign.
The big sale of Kyrell Lisbie to Millwall, as owner Darragh MacAnthony has discussed the club’s debt, and a string of solid signings have shown a new strategy being implemented. There will be hopes that this could be yet another multi-million-pound sale for Posh.
Speaking on X MacAnthony delivered yet another honest assessment of Posh’s transfer status.
“Trust me, I’m working hard on all fronts to get it spot on in all positions we need filling squad-wise.
“Debt is under £12 million now from £18 million as we have been chipping away at it over last couple of seasons, and yes we will, as always, be spending this window like previous ones, before any fans pop up screaming about us selling players.”
Saturday’s 1-0 Carabao Cup victory over Bristol Rovers, secured by Harvey Leonard’s 19th-minute goal, provided a foundation for the club and for Williams’ hopes of a push towards the top end of the League One table. Ba’s potential move could also give the former Swansea City manager another versatile option in the heart of midfield, and with proven experience higher up, it should be a no-brainer.
