Paul Warne has revealed that a supporter told him he would be sacked if MK Dons failed to beat Luton Town on Saturday. The Dons boss was greeted with the blunt assessment before his side finally secured their first League One victory of the season with a 2-1 win at Stadium MK.
Speaking after the game, Warne told the Milton Keynes Citizen about the exchange as he reflected on the pressure surrounding his side’s difficult start. Dons had been beaten 5-1 by Reading the previous weekend, leaving frustration growing among sections of the fanbase ahead of Luton’s visit.
Warne Reveals Supporters’ Sacking Warning
Victory brought some much-needed relief for Warne, with Aaron Collins’ late penalty securing three points and lifting his side out of the relegation zone. Afterwards, the head coach reflected on how quickly the mood around a club can change.
“I understand how football is now more than ever. If you win, you’re heroes, if you lose, you’re not.
“I had a fan say to me ‘good luck today, I hope you win. If you don’t you’re getting sacked’ and I was like ‘Ok, I appreciate your kind comments!'”
Warne also praised his players for their response to the heavy defeat at Reading. Having endured another difficult afternoon just seven days earlier, Dons recovered to overcome opponents he believes share their ambitions.
“Within any season, there is good, bad and medium form, and that’s what we’ve been on to be fair. After the 5-1 drumming last week, it shows the character of the dressing room to come back against good opposition, who have the same ambitions as us, and to come out on top.”
Collins Penalty Secures First League Win
Alex Gilbey gave the hosts the lead after 25 minutes, escaping two defenders before firing a volley beyond Luton goalkeeper James Shea. Will Dennis then helped preserve that advantage with saves from Kasey Palmer and Jamie Donley as the visitors searched for an equaliser.
Dons had opportunities to extend their lead after the interval, with Eli Campbell heading wide and Sam Nombe seeing a deflected effort narrowly fail to cross the line. Luton eventually drew level in the 70th minute when Jordan Clark finished from the edge of the penalty area after being set up by Tudor Mendel.
Collins restored the home side’s advantage nine minutes later, converting from the spot after he had been brought down by George Johnston. The winner was his 10th goal in 11 appearances this season, continuing an impressive individual return despite the team’s struggles for league victories.
The result gave Dons a welcome boost ahead of successive away trips to Blackpool and Stevenage. For Warne, the challenge is now to build on that breakthrough after a week which brought both a heavy defeat and a reminder of the scrutiny that comes with his job.
