Paul Mullin has said that he would not have moved to Bradford City last season after a tough loan spell with the League One club.
The veteran striker moved to Valley Parade in the winter transfer window after a half-season away from Wrexham at Wigan Athletic, but failed to deliver with no goals in nine appearances.
Mullin Reveals Alexander Promise
Having finally left North Wales, where he earned cult icon status due to his efforts in the National League and League Two during their promotions, Mullin is now at Rotherham United, who have been targeting a new striker to replace the outgoing Sam Nombe.
Speaking to the Yorkshire Post about his struggles at Bradford upon his arrival at the New York Stadium, the 31-year-old said:
“I thought why not go and play at the top end of League One every week and chase another promotion type of thing. But then when I got there, the manager changed his mind about how he wanted to play, basically.
“It wasn’t a fall-out or anything, he just changed his plans of what he thought once when he first brought me in and then that was it really.
“I just didn’t manage to establish myself there, which obviously is difficult (anyway) because halfway through the season, the team have been really successful all year at doing what they’ve done because they were in a play-off position.
“So it was always going to be (more) difficult when the gaffer didn’t want to change from what he’d been doing which was the plan at first.
“But it’s totally understandable and I’m full of respect to him because they were brilliant all year. I just think if I’d have known that beforehand, then I probably wouldn’t have made the switch.”
Mullin Move Cost All Parties
With his spell at Wigan Athletic proving to be a struggle, Paul Mullin opted to head back to Wrexham and fight for a place before the chance to head to Bradford City came up.
The Bantams headed into January in dire need of new forward options to maintain their impressive start to the season, with Will Swan succumbing to injury, and backup Stephen Humphrys running hot and cold when handed an opportunity to play up front.
In response, Graham Alexander signed both Mullin and Ethan Wheatley on loan, and neither move worked out as planned, leaving the Bantams to struggle in goalscoring for much of the second half of the season.
That came to a head in the playoff semi-final, with City looking completely tepid and unable to challenge Bolton Wanderers seriously at any point in either leg.
Neither striker signed were impressive at all, and while Ethan Wheatley could ultimately earn a move up to the Championship amid interest from Cardiff City and another unnamed side, Mullin has now been forced to drop down into League Two with Rotherham United.
Earning a chance to prove himself as the main man at a club in a division he has thrived in in the past, this move to the Millers may be the ideal way for Mullin to bounce back after a tough few years.
