Notts County have confirmed their fifth signing of the January transfer window, completing a loan move for attacking midfielder Harald Nilsen Tangen from Norwegian top-flight outfit Sarpsborg 08.

The Magpies currently sit inside the play-off places and have been active throughout the window, with the club making clear its intention to build depth and quality for the second half of the campaign. The arrival of Tangen follows earlier additions across several areas of the squad and reflects a targeted approach rather than wholesale change.

County had explored the possibility of a reunion with former favourite Ruben Rodrigues earlier in the window, with BBC Nottingham Sport reporting that discussions took place over a potential return to Meadow Lane. However, those talks were not expected to progress during January, with interest from elsewhere proving stronger. With that avenue unlikely, attention turned towards alternative options capable of offering creativity in advanced areas.

Tangen Career

Tangen arrives from Norway having built up significant top-flight experience with Viking FK and Sarpsborg 08, making more than 130 appearances in the Eliteserien across his career. He spent several seasons establishing himself at Viking, including a productive 2021 campaign where he contributed goals from midfield, before moving on to Sarpsborg and continuing to feature regularly at the highest domestic level.

Tangen’s profile suggests he can provide that missing link for the Magpies. Comfortable receiving between the lines, he offers ball-carrying ability, quick combinations in tight areas, and a willingness to press aggressively without possession. Those traits align closely with County’s preferred high-intensity approach and the emphasis placed on structured pressing from the front.

Even more creative

The Magpies have already scored 39 league goals this season, but the addition of a more creative presence behind the striker could prove decisive in tight games during the run-in. With promotion margins often fine, the ability to unlock compact defences late in matches becomes increasingly valuable.

There will be hope that this is the next ‘big thing’ for County. Rodrigues was one that did really well, but there have been others as their recruitment turns up gems, and while some teams, such as Peterborough, have been burned by the Scandinavian market, Martin Paterson‘s outfit has far more hits than misses.

While Tangen arrives without the same profile as Rodrigues among supporters, expectations will be shaped by the precedent set by those earlier successes. With the play-off picture tightening and consistency vital, this signing appears less about headline impact and more about fine-tuning a promotion push that remains firmly on track.
