Leicester City are poised to receive a significant financial boost after Abdul Fatawu completed a medical ahead of a proposed £23 million move to Ipswich Town.
The Ghana international is expected to leave the King Power Stadium following Leicester’s relegation to League One, with Ipswich prepared to offer him an immediate return to the Premier League. The two clubs are understood to have reached a verbal agreement after negotiations accelerated towards the end of last week.
According to the latest update, Fatawu has now completed his medical examinations. Ipswich are set to pay an initial £20 million, with a further £3 million potentially due through performance-related add-ons.
Although the final paperwork has not yet been completed, the transfer is expected to go through. Fatawu would become another major addition to the squad being assembled at Portman Road following Ipswich’s return to the Premier League.
Fatawu offers big return
The deal would represent a big return for Leicester, who initially recruited the winger on loan from Sporting CP during the 2023/24 campaign. The Foxes reportedly paid around £638,000 for that temporary agreement before completing a permanent transfer worth approximately £14.4 million the following summer.
Fatawu quickly became an important figure at Leicester, helping the club win the Championship title during his first season in England. His progress was interrupted by a serious knee injury during the following campaign, but he returned to play a prominent role in 2025/26, scoring nine times in 44 league appearances.
One of his most memorable contributions came against Ipswich in December, when he scored from inside his own half during Leicester’s 3-1 victory. He clearly impressed the Tractor Boys, even if manager Gary O’Neil wasn’t at the helm for the goal.
His expected departure continues a considerable turnover of players at Leicester following relegation. Harry Winks, Jeremy Monga and Victor Kristiansen have also left the club, while Jannik Vestergaard departed after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.
Russell Martin has so far added Conor Chaplin and Alex McCarthy on free transfers, but further arrivals are absolutely required before the League One season begins.
