Mansfield Town have moved quickly to secure Jon Russell on a permanent deal after the midfielder impressed during his loan spell at Field Mill.

The 25-year-old will officially join the Stags on a two-year contract this summer following the expiry of his deal at Barnsley, ending what had become a productive short-term spell in Nottinghamshire with a longer commitment from both player and club.

Russell arrived at Mansfield in January and immediately became an important figure in Nigel Clough’s side as they pushed strongly through the second half of the League One season. The midfielder scored five goals in amber and blue and helped the Stags lose just once in their final 15 league fixtures, a run which ultimately secured a tenth-place finish. It represented Mansfield’s highest EFL placing since 1987 and gave supporters plenty of optimism heading into the new campaign.

Clough was understandably keen to retain the Jamaican international permanently, particularly after already securing Tyler Roberts for another season earlier this month.

“On the back of Tyler Roberts extending his stay, this is another important signing.

“Jon has impressed immensely since arriving in January and got goals for us from midfield which is a rare commodity these days.

“We’re delighted that he’ll be with us for the next couple of seasons at least.”

Russell’s career path has been an interesting one. He came through the academy at Chelsea after joining the club as an under-seven player before eventually turning professional in 2017. Despite his progression through the youth ranks, senior opportunities at Stamford Bridge never materialised, leading to a loan move with Accrington Stanley in 2020.

A permanent move to Huddersfield Town followed in 2021, where he enjoyed spells in the Championship and showed flashes of quality, including a late winner against Cardiff City during the 2021-22 campaign. Barnsley then moved for him in January 2023, but consistency proved difficult to establish during his time at Oakwell.

It now appears Mansfield may have found the right fit for the versatile midfielder. Russell is capable of operating as a box-to-box presence, further forward as a number ten, or deeper in midfield, and his physical profile alongside his eye for a pass gives Clough valuable flexibility heading into next season.

Sensible Gamble

For Mansfield, this feels like sensible business rather than a gamble. Russell already knows the dressing room, the system and the expectations around the club, while his performances over the second half of last season suggested he still has room to develop.

In a summer where continuity could be important for the Stags, retaining a midfielder who already proved influential may turn out to be one of their smartest moves.
