Shrewsbury Town have completed the signing of right-back Arkell Jude-Boyd, despite the defender previously being linked with Luton Town, according to The News.
The 23-year-old has joined Salop on a free transfer following his release by Cheltenham Town, where he made 37 appearances last season. The move keeps him in League Two, despite earlier suggestions that clubs higher up the pyramid were monitoring his situation.
Jude-Boyd has signed a two-year contract at the Croud Meadow, with Shrewsbury also holding an option for a further 12 months. He becomes the club’s first signing of the summer as Gavin Cowan begins reshaping his squad following a difficult campaign.
Shrewsbury Secure First Summer Signing
The move represents an early statement from Shrewsbury, who released 10 players at the end of last season. Salop spent much of the campaign in danger near the foot of League Two before improving during the second half of the season and eventually finishing 19th. Cowan’s side will now be looking to build a more stable platform ahead of the new campaign, and Jude-Boyd’s arrival gives them a fresh option on the right side of defence.
The Saint Lucia international had emerged as a surprise name in transfer speculation earlier this summer. Jack Wilshere’s Hatters were reported to have been among the clubs taking an interest, while Portmsouth, Plymouth and Rotherham were also linked.
However, any potential move to the Championship or League One has now been ruled out, with Shrewsbury moving quickly to secure his signature.
Speaking after completing the switch, Jude-Boyd said:
“It’s amazing. The facilities are amazing and I’m ecstatic to get the season started.
“The gaffer, he was a crucial part of me coming here. He filled me with confidence and I believe we can have a successful season.
“It’s the attention to detail – that was the main thing (the manager offers).
“I know what he wants from me and for a player like me, I thrive when I know what is expected.”
Luton Town Link Ends As Right-Back Market Remains Active
Luton have been linked with multiple players this summer, and seem close to securing George Johnston for their promotion push. Links will continue to emerge, and whether they saw Jude-Boyd as a viable option or not remains unknown.
For Salop, this looks like the sort of deal that fits the early stages of a rebuild. Jude-Boyd has EFL experience, arrives without a transfer fee and has clearly bought into Cowan’s plans. The fact other clubs were reportedly watching him will only make the move feel more encouraging for Shrewsbury supporters, particularly after a season in which momentum and confidence were not always easy to find.
