Doncaster Rovers winger Kyle Hurst is facing a spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury, with his future at the club now uncertain as his contract approaches its expiry this summer.

The 23-year-old had been due to spend the second half of the season on loan at Scunthorpe United, but the move has now been cut short after he picked up the injury in a recent match against Altrincham. Early fears suggested the problem could be a serious cruciate ligament injury, but those concerns were later eased following scans.

Despite avoiding the worst-case scenario, the winger is still expected to be out for a number of weeks, which leaves him in a difficult position with his Doncaster contract set to expire at the end of the season and no extension option currently in place.

Doncaster manager Grant McCann confirmed the player has returned to the club for treatment and rehabilitation, with the club’s medical staff now overseeing his recovery.

Loan Spell Cut Short

Hurst had only recently joined Scunthorpe United on loan in search of regular football, but the injury brought an early end to that spell. He made just five appearances for the Iron, although the club’s staff were reportedly impressed with what they saw during his short time there.

The winger now faces a race to get back to fitness before the end of the campaign, although the timeline for his return remains uncertain. With several Doncaster players approaching the end of their contracts this summer, the club will soon have decisions to make regarding their squad for next season.

Hurst is one of four players whose deals expire at the end of the campaign without an option clause, meaning the club must decide whether to offer new terms or allow them to leave. Injuries at this stage of the season can often complicate those decisions, particularly when players are unable to finish the campaign strongly.

For Doncaster, the situation leaves them monitoring his recovery closely, while for the player himself, the focus will now be on getting fit and proving his fitness before the summer.

These situations are always difficult. Clubs must balance loyalty and potential with availability and squad planning, while players are left trying to recover quickly enough to secure their future. Hurst’s injury may not be as serious as first feared, but the timing could still have a major impact on what happens next for both the player and Doncaster Rovers this summer.
