Huddersfield Town could struggle to keep goalkeeper Matty Young, with Liverpool reportedly monitoring the Sunderland youngster.

According to journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon, Liverpool are interested in Young after his impressive start with the Terriers.

Young Has Transformed Huddersfield’s Goalkeeping Situation

Since returning to League One, the Terriers have been disappointing, finishing 10th and ninth in their two seasons back in the third tier.

Last term, the club’s defensive record was a concern. The season saw four different goalkeepers between the sticks. Experienced Lee Nicholls played much of the campaign, but after a poor spell he was replaced by Owen Goodman.

Goodman did not last long, returning to Crystal Palace after just ten games.

Jak Alnwick and Nik Tzanev also featured between the posts, but neither managed to stamp their authority on the team. Alnwick conceded 11 goals in only five matches. That led to a major reshuffle of the goalkeeping department. Over the summer, Nicholls and Jacob Chapman departed.

Young was brought in as the solution, and he has done considerably more than simply fill the position. The Sunderland loanee has started every league game so far and has helped provide a level of consistency that was missing from the side last season.

Huddersfield have lost just once this campaign, with the defeat coming against Bromley in South London. For a club dreaming of a return to the Championship, having a reliable goalkeeper behind them could prove crucial.

Young’s Rise At Salford

Young arrived in West Yorkshire with high expectations. He appeared 77 times for Salford City over the previous two seasons. It took four months for Young to break into the first team; he struggled to dislodge then 35-year-old Jamie Jones, with his break coming after an impressive display in the FA Cup against Cheltenham Town.

He went on to start eight consecutive matches, helping Karl Robinson’s side record seven wins and seven clean sheets.

There was an inevitable setback when Salford faced Manchester City in the FA Cup. Young conceded eight goals in a heavy defeat. Despite initially derailing his development, the keeper fought back and finished the campaign as Ammies’s first choice.

Young kept 15 clean sheets during his final season with the club, further enhancing his reputation as one of the EFL’s most promising young players.

Nixon claims ‘Sunderland have Young under contract, but an offer would be hard to refuse.’ Those words may worry manager Martin Drury, who has limited control over his own goalkeeper.

Young has youth, experience and an increasingly impressive track record. Sunderland clearly rate him highly. The Black Cats handed him a contract until 2030 before sending him to the Terriers, underlining their belief in him.

For now, Young remains a Sunderland player on loan at Huddersfield, but Liverpool’s interest could leave the Terriers facing an uncomfortable battle to retain one of the most important additions to their squad.
