Grimsby Town are interested in bringing in a midfielder from one of their League Two rivals who had 16 goal contributions last season.

The Mariners have had a positive start to their campaign and are currently unbeaten with one win and one draw.

As they look to finish in the play-offs once again and potentially go a step further, Grimsby are keen to bolster their squad with reinforcements.

One player they have been linked with before the end of the transfer window is York City midfielder, Mark Shelton.

Grimsby Town Eye Move for York City’s Mark Shelton

Pete O’Rourke has shared on his X account that Grimsby are eyeing a move for Mark Shelton before the end of the window.

Shelton only joined York City this summer after agreeing a deal to join the National League winners at the end of his contract at Barnet.

Impressive League Two Campaign

Shelton impressed last season for Barnet in League Two. The midfielder played 40 times in the league, starting 34 times and averaging 73 minutes per game. His performances received an average Sofascore rating of 6.87.

He ended the season as Barnet’s top assister with eight assists in the league. Shelton also averaged 1.1 key passes per game and had a pass accuracy of 72%.

Not only did he perform well creatively, but Shelton also scored eight goals – the third-highest in the Barnet team. He finished the season with 1.9 shots per game and 0.6 shots on target per game.

Shelton also showed his abilities defensively last season. He ended the campaign with 0.7 interceptions per game, two tackles per game, 1.3 clearances per game, and recovered three balls per game.

Failing to Break into the York Side

Despite only signing in July and even with his impressive numbers last season, Shelton has featured for York this campaign.

He was an unused substitute in their 2-0 defeat to Crawley Town in the EFL Cup First Round but hasn’t made the matchday squad in either of York’s league games.

His absence has opened the door to a potential departure before the end of the window.

If he does make the move to Grimsby, Shelton could play a key role in their play-off chase this season.
