Grimsby Town have continued their proactive approach to their footballing operations, with one of their standout forwards committing his future to the club.
The Mariners have been particularly attentive to their contract situations, with central defenders Cameron McJannet and Doug Tharme recently tied down for next season.
This now leaves a large portion of David Artell’s squad under contract for next season. Meaning that regardless of promotion or not, the summer window will be about building further rather than a wholesale rebuild.
Grimsby Town Ace Extends Contract
Announced via the club’s official website, left winger Charles Vernam has signed a contract that will keep him at Blundell Park until 2027, while the club also maintain an option to extend for a further year.
This deal is a signal of how far Vernam has come this season. While his ability has never been in doubt, his spells with Lincoln City, Bradford City, and his initial return to the Mariners have been defined by injuries.
Managing to stay fit for the entire campaign, the 29-year-old has registered 7 goals and 8 assists in League Two this season, while reaching double digits for assists in all competitions.
The winger has delivered several memorable moments this season, wrapping up three points away at Meadow Lane last weekend with a strike from distance and also shocking the world when opening the scoring against Manchester United last August.
The Contract Situation At Grimsby Town
As previously mentioned, Grimsby have been admirably attentive to their contract situation this season.
One of the more forward-thinking clubs in the division, the core of their squad appears to be tied down for next season.
However, the likes of George McEachran and Jason Daði Svanþórsson’s situations are still up in the air, and the club should be expected to act. The latter has been unavailable for the bulk of the season through injury, but was one of the brightest sparks for Artell last year.
If the club is not to lift promotion this season, they are currently expected to approach next campaign with an already impressive core of players.
With key midfielders and defenders tied down alongside the club’s goal and assist leaders, the Mariners appear to be on the up, regardless of this season’s outcome.
What Has Been Said?
On extending his stay in North East Lincolnshire, Vernam said:
“I’m buzzing. I love this football club, and I feel like I’m playing some of the best football of my career here.”
“The fans have been unbelievable with me, and I want to keep repaying that support. We’ve got something special building and I’m excited to see where it takes us.”
Meanwhile, head coach David Artell also expressed his delight with the winger committing his future to the club:
“We’re delighted to extend Charles’ contract.
“He’s had an outstanding season and his new deal is fully deserved. He’s been consistent, as well as improved throughout the season, and we’re delighted he’s going to be staying here for an extended period.
“We hope that he continues his form, not just for the rest of this season but for the remainder of his new contract as well.”
