Exeter City have recalled Charlie Cummins from his loan spell at Weston-super-Mare, with the young forward going straight into the matchday squad for the trip to Peterborough United.
The decision brings an early end to a productive spell in National League South, where Cummins had become a regular and a popular figure with supporters at the Optima Stadium.
Cummins, who joined Exeter from Cobh Ramblers during the January 2024 transfer window, had been gaining valuable senior experience under Scott Rogers at Weston-super-Mare. The 21-year-old made 22 appearances during his loan, scoring twice and providing two assists, with his energy and work rate earning praise throughout the campaign.
He initially moved to the Seagulls in October as Rogers’ first signing after taking charge, and quickly established himself as a key part of the side’s attacking unit during what has been a strong season for the Somerset club. His final appearance proved particularly memorable, as he scored, collected the Man of the Match award and did so in front of his parents, who had travelled from Ireland to watch him.
Speaking about the recall, Weston-super-Mare manager Scott Rogers said:
“From day one, Charlie’s attitude towards the loan with us has been excellent and this has mirrored his performances. If there was a way to go out, then last Saturday was definitely the way to go. His mum and dad flew over from Ireland to watch, we won, he scored and got Man of the Match.
“Everybody at Weston-super-Mare really does hope that Charlie goes back to Exeter and gets his chance, we’d love nothing more than to see him earn a new contract. Again, we’d like to thank Marcus Flitcroft and Exeter City for trusting us with their young players.”
Cummins has already had a taste of League One action this season, making his first team league debut against Wycombe Wanderers on August 19. His recall suggests he could now feature more prominently during the closing months of the campaign.
Exeter currently sit 14th in the League One table, nine points outside the playoff places with two games in hand. The Grecians are preparing for a period of transition, with Dan Green stepping into interim charge following Gary Caldwell’s departure to Wigan Athletic earlier this week.
Green’s side travel to Peterborough United this afternoon knowing a positive run could still bring them into the fringes of the top six conversation. The return of Cummins adds another attacking option at a crucial stage of the season, and with momentum behind him from his spell at Weston-super-Mare, he may yet have a part to play in Exeter’s push for a strong finish.
