Multiple League One clubs are tracking Cambridge United defender Mamadou Jobe ahead of a potential summer move, with the 22-year-old understood to have attracted interest after a breakout campaign in League Two.
As revealed exclusively to The Deck, Peterborough United, Stockport County and Bradford City are among the clubs credited with keeping close tabs on Jobe’s progress, as he continues to establish himself as a key figure in Cambridge’s back line following his return from a long-term injury. Those watching see him as a defender with clear scope to step up, with a combination of physicality and mentality that has drawn repeated praise from within the Abbey Stadium set-up.
Stockport interest solid
Stockport’s interest, in particular, is framed by the uncertainty around centre-back Ethan Pye, who has been valued at around £3m and has been linked with a possible move to West Brom at the end of the season. If that deal develops, the Hatters are expected to explore replacements early, and Jobe is thought to be one of the names under consideration.
Jobe’s pathway has been anything but straightforward. A Cambridge academy product, he has built experience through a series of non-league loans, including spells at St Neots Town, Concord Rangers, St Albans City, Maidstone United and Gateshead, before forcing his way into the Cambridge picture. A serious ACL rupture suffered in the build-up to the 2024-25 season then halted his momentum entirely, but his return this term has been marked by growing responsibility and a sustained run of involvement.
Cambridge head coach Neil Harris has been among the most vocal advocates for Jobe’s long-term prospects, highlighting not only his defending but the mentality that underpins it.
“The first time I really had eyes on him was a couple of training sessions at different times over the two spells, but it was pre-season and I was impressed from day one.
“And that was not just with his ability, but his mentality as well and the way he wanted to defend his goal. His physicality stands out for everybody to see.”
Harris has also pointed to the way Jobe has responded to setbacks, including losing his place earlier in the season, as a sign he is building the habits required to play higher up the pyramid.
“Michael (Morrison) came back and took the shirt off him. He was gutted, but he was really good about it and he was like ‘next time I’m in the team, I want to stay in the team’.
“That’s been his mindset ever since and he just wants to get better and better. I think he’s a top player and he’s going to go way above the level he’s playing at the moment, there’s huge potential in him.”
Harris even suggested the defender is showing the characteristics of a future captain, referencing moments where Jobe has taken the armband during matches and the leadership traits staff believe he can develop.
Braced for summer interest
If the interest hardens into bids, Cambridge’s stance will be a significant subplot in the early stages of the summer window. They have a young defender back on an upward curve after a major injury, and clubs with promotion ambitions do not tend to wait around when they believe they have identified value.
The reality is that this is exactly the type of market Cambridge have to navigate well. If Jobe continues on this trajectory, the attention will only intensify, and the club’s next decision will be whether his best value comes in a transfer fee in the summer or in keeping a developing defender at the heart of a promotion push and backing him to be the difference on the pitch.
