Former Republic of Ireland defender Richard Dunne has expressed an interest in becoming the new manager of Derry City.
The 46-year-old has yet to begin his senior managerial career but holds a UEFA Pro Licence and remains determined to secure an opportunity in the League of Ireland Premier Division.
Dunne interested in Derry opportunity
Derry are searching for a manager following Tiernan Lynch’s departure at the beginning of August. Asked by RTÉ Sport whether he would consider applying for the vacancy, Dunne praised the club’s potential without confirming that he had entered the recruitment process.
“Derry’s a really good club and a club that seems to have really good backing. I’m sure they have loads of potential targets and, you know, just see how it goes.
“I still do coaching, I’m at games all the time and, yeah, I still have ambitions to coach at a higher level.”
Dunne was linked with the vacant Bohemians position in 2022 and has previously spoken about following former Republic of Ireland teammate Damien Duff into management. He has remained involved in coaching since retiring as a player and is currently working through his Monaco-based FMC Elite Football Academy.
The former Manchester City and Aston Villa defender was speaking during a visit to Home Farm, the schoolboy club where he began his career. Home Farm have entered the newly created FAI National League as Home Farm DCU, with Dunne planning to send one of his academy’s most promising players to the Dublin club as part of a new partnership.

Dunne began his career with Home Farm before joining Everton as a 16-year-old in 1996. He made his senior debut the following year and played 60 league games for the Toffees before reuniting with Joe Royle at Manchester City in a £3.5 million transfer in October 2000.
The centre-back spent almost nine years with City, making 296 league appearances and becoming club captain. He was named the club’s Player of the Year in four consecutive seasons between 2004/05 and 2007/08, establishing himself as a central figure during a period of considerable change in Manchester.
Dunne joined Aston Villa in 2009 and was selected in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year during his first season, which also included an appearance in the League Cup final. He later helped Queens Park Rangers earn promotion through the Championship play-offs in 2014 before retiring in November 2015. Dunne also won 80 Republic of Ireland caps, represented his country at the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2012, and produced one of his most celebrated performances during a goalless draw against Russia in Moscow in 2011.
Dunne’s playing reputation and experience at the highest level would make his appointment an intriguing one, but Derry must decide whether potential outweighs the absence of senior management experience. His comments show genuine interest without amounting to a direct application, although publicly leaving the door open may be enough to encourage the club to explore whether he is ready to take his first managerial role.
