Sutton United’s defensive standout Edon Pruti has experienced a strong debut season in the National League, with his efforts now attracting interest from several higher-division sides.
The 24-year-old joined Chris Agutter’s side on a permanent deal in the summer – arriving from National League South side Slough Town, following a standout six-month period with the club.
With the season now just two games away from completion, attention from some clubs is slowly turning to the summer window, including from the EFL as sides look to recruit some of the standout stars in non-league.
Sutton Face Competition To Keep Key Defender
After a frustrating mid-season period, Sutton rallied together and clinched their survival with games to spare, now sitting 18th in the National League with all four relegation spots being set in stone.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke recently revealed via his Twitter account that League Two duo Crawley Town and Grimsby Town are amongst several EFL clubs that have set their sights on a potential move for Sutton United defender Edon Pruti this summer.
Pruti joined Sutton United for an undisclosed fee in the summer, though his contract length was never determined in the official article following the completion of his transfer.
After joining in June, the former Albanian youth international has registered 39 appearances across all competitions for Sutton, proving to be a constant reliability for Chris Agutter’s side so far this season. Amongst those outings, the defender has contributed to four goals, including key strikes against Hartlepool United and Carlisle United.

Sutton’s most recent league outing, at Brunton Park in a 3-0 loss, was only the second game Pruti has been an unused substitute in since November.
Would Pruti Fare Better With Crawley Or Grimsby?
Whether Sutton would be willing to entertain a possible sale of Pruti remains to be seen, but should this be the case, which would be the best?
Grimsby Town currently find themselves just outside of the play-off places in League Two, with just four games left to play. They are four points behind Chesterfield but possess a game in hand and better goal difference.
Whilst this is significantly better than Crawley, there is a risk that Pruti would suffer a drop-off of minutes, meaning Grimsby may not necessarily be the ‘ideal’ destination.
Meanwhile, Crawley Town are battling for survival in the fourth tier, sitting 21st in the table and just a single point above the current drop zone. They have struggled defensively for the majority of the season, conceding 65 goals in 43 matches – and if they were to stay up, the back-line is certainly an area they are likely to strengthen.
The other question to this is whether Pruti is good enough to make the step up to the EFL, with heavy minutes not necessarily meaning his quality is enough.
Speaking with National League Lowdown’s co-host Louis on the potential for Pruti to make the step up, he stated…
“(Edon) Pruti has done well this season to transition from semi-professional football in the National League South to playing regularly in the National League and taking the captain’s armband.
“He’s shown his quality and defensive attributes across the season but has, at times, looked vulnerable within the possession-based style of play Agutter likes to play.
“He could very well make an impact in League Two but might benefit from another season at National League level to further develop his game before making the step up.”

According to SofaScore, Crawley & Grimsby both average the second and third highest ball-possession in the division, which could be a factor that affects Pruti’s success at either of those clubs.
Likewise, Crawley are facing relegation to the National League themselves, and thus making a possible move unlikely unless survival can be confirmed, mainly due to Pruti already being a captain of a fifth-tier side as it is.
