Bromley are keen on signing Charlton Athletic man Daniel Kanu as they look to build a League One squad next season, according to Rich Cawley’s Substack.

The Ravens are embarking on their first-ever season in the third tier after winning the League Two title on the final day, with Andy Woodman already on the lookout for new signings to help them avoid relegation.

Kanu Eyed By Bromley

With star forward Michael Cheek now 34, attention is now turning to finding some longer-term options to replace their veteran when the time comes for him to move on.

In a new report from Rich Cawley’s South London Sport Substack page, the Hayes Lane club have landed on Daniel Kanu, who is believed to be courting attention from multiple teams this summer following a successful season at Walsall.

The Sierra Leone international scored 18 times for the Saddlers from 44 appearances, ending the campaign as the leading goalscorer at the club and joint-fourth overall in the League Two Golden Boot race.

Kanu has been in the first-team fold previously at the Valley, playing 71 times for the club since his emergence in 2022, and has scored nine times in red. He briefly went on loan to National League side Southend United in 2023, scoring four times in six appearances.

However, it is unknown as to whether Bromley will pursue a permanent deal for the 21-year-old, and could be thwarted by Charlton Athletic, who may opt to keep the striker as part of their first-team plans going forward.

Selection Headache May Force Hand

Daniel Kanu has finally delivered on the glimpses of promise he showed in previous seasons when afforded opportunities at Charlton, and a strong League Two campaign has rightly earned him interest from elsewhere.

However, while his desire may be to continue at the club he emerged through the academy ranks of, the numbers in the Addicks’ squad right now mean that a move away may be his only choice to secure regular first-team minutes.

Should Lyndon Dykes and Matty Godden agree deals to remain at the Valley, there could be as many as eight first-team-ready strikers at the club, which would likely see one or two of them shifted on in the coming months.

Athletic were one of the worst performers in the Championship up front last season, which should prompt Nathan Jones into making some tough decisions, and that could mean sanctioning an exit for Kanu, who has one year left on his deal.

While Bromley are the first to enter the queue to sign the striker, they might not be best placed to do so, with many other League One sides likely wanting to try their luck with someone who has proven themselves in the division below.

Goal Struggles Should Prompt Lineup Change

As mentioned, Charlton Athletic have been poor with their goal output since promotion, with only Blackburn Rovers and the relegated Sheffield Wednesday finding the net fewer times than Nathan Jones’ side.

Only Sonny Carey, Lyndon Dykes and Charlie Kelman found the net more than three times for the Addicks in the Championship season, meaning that the club is screaming out for some new blood to try and spur them on.

While it may be a big gamble to take, promoting two of their younger stars, Daniel Kanu and Micah Mbick, to support Kelman and Dykes up front may provide that excitement the club craves.

The pair were strong options for League Two sides last season, and if not for a brutal injury, Mbick may have been able to lift Colchester United into a better position and maybe even challenge to win the Golden Boot.

A jump up to the Championship may be a daunting task for both, but bringing them in for an extra burst of energy late in games could be enough to flip a few results around, keeping Charlton a healthy distance away from the relegation conversation.
