League One promotion hopefuls Bradford City are targeting a move for League Two strugglers Accrington Stanley’s 6ft 2 defender Benn Ward this January. However, they face a challenge from Chesterfield and potentially Reading to sign the player.
The Bantams have been one of the stand-out sides this season and currently sit second in the League One table after 18 games. Only Cardiff City sit above them and they also sit three points above the chasing pack of Stevenage and Lincoln City.
However, to maintain their form into the second half of the season, recruits may be needed to ensure fatigue or complacency doesn’t set in. Many of the sides that were expected to challenge for the title will likely turn to the window to bolster their own squads.
Bradford City Amongst Sides Targeting Accrington Stanley Defender
Bradford City are reportedly one of several sides monitoring Accrington Stanley’s Benn Ward as they look to improve their defence.
Ward has been one of the stand-out performers in League Two, boasting a 7.26 rating with WhoScored which places him amongst the top defenders in the league. This is despite Accrington languishing in 17th place after 18 games.
The Bantams are not the only side showing an interest according to Alan Nixon. Chesterfield in League Two and Reading in League One are likely to pursue a deal for the 21-year-old in January.
Ward has previously played for Hastings, Burnley and Swindon Town before moving to Accrington in January 2025.
Can the Bantams Win the Transfer Battle?
Bradford City are currently in the best position out of all the interested sides. They are performing well and could potentially offer Championship football next season. However, that impressive form could also be a cause for concern. For a 21-year-old that is playing regularly to displace a solid defence in the league above is a big ask. Reading and Chesterfield may be able to offer more guaranteed game time which may come into play.
