Bolton Wanderers are among the clubs monitoring Exeter City striker Jayden Wareham ahead of the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old forward has emerged as one of League One’s most productive attackers this season, and his form has not gone unnoticed as interest builds from both within the division and higher up the pyramid.
Wareham’s Rise Sparks Interest
Wareham’s rise has been a huge surprise, given that he was cast aside by Reading in the summer. With just five goals in 37 outings last season, he was allowed to leave Berkshire for an undisclosed fee, with Exeter City his destination.
This season, he’s bagged 21 goals across all competitions, including a strong return in the league. He has developed into a genuine focal point for Exeter’s attack. While those contributions have not been enough to lift the Grecians away from relegation danger, they have significantly enhanced his profile.
Both Bolton Wanderers and promotion rivals Bradford City are reportedly keeping a close watch on the striker’s situation. The pair currently sit in the top six and are already looking ahead to how they might strengthen if they secure a place in the Championship. However, they may face competition from clubs already operating at that level, which could complicate any potential move.
Wareham’s trajectory makes him an attractive proposition, but not a cheap one. Still only 22, he would surely fetch a seven-figure sum, with Leyton Orient’s Dom Ballard a comparable player, valued by his club at £15m.
Career Path Shows Steady Progression
The forward’s journey has not been straightforward, but it has been one of steady growth. Beginning in the academies at Reading and Queens Park Rangers, he earned his first senior opportunity with non-league Woking, where he began to show glimpses of his potential.
A move to Chelsea followed after a successful trial, although first-team opportunities did not materialise. A loan spell at Leyton Orient offered limited exposure, and it was his return to Reading that provided a more stable platform to develop.
Why Clubs Are Looking Closely
Bolton have built a squad capable of challenging at the top end of League One, but like Bradford, they are assessing how to bridge the gap to the Championship. Adding a forward in form, and one with room to grow, would align with that ambition. However, they also have a track record of buying ‘the best’ from clubs in League One, and those players not helping them to promotion, with Dion Charles one such example.
What is clear is that Wareham’s performances have elevated him from a promising forward into one of the most talked-about attacking players outside the top tier. Whether that leads to a move this summer will depend on how the promotion picture unfolds, but his name is now firmly on the radar of clubs planning for the next level.
