Barnsley have begun initial talks over a potential move to sign Sheffield United‘s Louie Marsh.
The Tykes are looking to overhaul their attacking options after the exit of Adam Phillips to their League One rivals in Bradford City, with 31-year-old Cameron McGeehan brought in on a free transfer as his replacement.
Marsh Move Considered
Now, according to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Daniel Stendel is considering making further additions to his attacking midfielder ranks, with Barnsley now entering talks with Championship side Sheffield United for Louie Marsh.
The 22-year-old has been stuck on the fringes of the Blades’ squad in recent years, and has earned successive loan moves at Doncaster Rovers, Fleetwood Town and most recently in the Scottish Premiership with Falkirk.
He made nine appearances for the Bairns during the winter months of last season, scoring once and assisting twice, before an injury in February cut his spell short in what was a successful campaign for the newly-promoted side.
Marsh’s future at Bramall Lane is still secured, having signed a three-and-a-half-year extension to his deal in 2025 ahead of his loan switch to Fleetwood.
Barnsley have made a handful of moves to strengthen their options in the wake of David McGoldrick’s exit and continued speculation around Reyes Cleary’s future, bringing in Makenzie Kirk on loan from Portsmouth and the addition of Amani Richards as well as Australian winger Clayton Taylor.
Is Louie Marsh A Good Addition?
With Barnsley looking to try and rebalance their side after a turbulent few months on and off the pitch, recruiting younger players has been a key focus for the club in the summer window.
They have done admirable work to sign adequate wide cover in case a deal for Reyes Cleary does come to fruition, and while a new striker should be a key focus for the remainder of the window, adding a final attacking midfield option cannot hurt.
Patrick Kelly has stepped up to become the new first choice in the 10 role following Adam Phillips’ exit, and looks poised to carry on his work with plenty of well-worked chances created in the game against Bromley which ultimately were squandered or shut out by Shamal George.
Louie Marsh would come in arguably as a depth choice, which while may not be the most exciting of additions, is sensible squad building for the Tykes for the season ahead.
