Lincoln City moved to the top of the League One table after a superb 2-0 victory over Cardiff City, writes Gary Hutchinson from the Cardiff City Stadium.
The Imps produced a disciplined and resilient display in South Wales, absorbing long spells of pressure before striking twice in the second half to secure a result that could have a huge impact on the promotion race.
Michael Skubala made one change to the side, with Jack Moylan dropping to the bench after a dead leg. Ryley Towler came into the starting line-up, although City retained their usual shape rather than switching to a back three. Perry Ng and Dylan Lawlor were among the notable absences for the home side.
City started brightly and almost took the lead inside five minutes. George Wickens launched a long ball forward that Rob Street flicked into the path of Ben House. The striker reacted quickly to steal possession from Will Fish and burst into space, but he could only fire over the bar with Adam Reach well placed in the middle.
The visitors then began to apply pressure through a series of long throws that caused problems for the Cardiff defence. One delivery on 13 minutes created uncertainty for goalkeeper Nathan Trott, who failed to claim cleanly before the ball was eventually cleared for a corner.
Another long throw shortly afterwards again sparked panic inside the home penalty area, while neat play on 21 minutes saw House lay the ball back to Reeco Hackett, whose effort was blocked before City launched yet another delivery into the box.
Despite those moments, Cardiff gradually began to assert themselves. With the home side dominating possession, Wickens was forced into action on 34 minutes when Ollie Tanner curled a shot towards the far corner. The City goalkeeper stretched full length to push the effort away.
Rubin Colwill tested Wickens again moments later, before a City defender threw themselves in front of a follow-up effort as the hosts threatened to break the deadlock late in the first half.
Second Half
The second half began with Cardiff again enjoying most of the ball, but City struck decisively on 55 minutes. Tom Hamer clipped a pass down the line to Street, who flicked the ball into House. The forward quickly returned it, sliding Street through on goal. Holding off his defender, the striker finished calmly past Trott to give the Imps the lead.
Cardiff continued to dominate possession but struggled to turn it into clear opportunities. Their control was punished again on 73 minutes when City broke quickly. Conor McGrandles won the ball in midfield and released substitute Dom Jefferies, who surged forward into open space before finishing confidently to double the advantage.
The home side pushed forward in search of a way back into the match. Alex Robertson and Colwill both attempted efforts from range, while Callum Robinson forced Wickens into a save through a crowded penalty area.
City remained organised and composed through nine minutes of added time, even going close to a third when Tom Bayliss forced Trott into a late save. When the final whistle arrived, the travelling supporters celebrated wildly after watching their side secure a result that lifted them to the summit of League One.
It was not a performance built on dominance of possession, but on discipline, work rate and clinical finishing. In the context of the promotion race, it felt like far more than just another three points.
